Interview with Tim Bolton, VP of Sales for North American Plastics

Posted 12th March 2019 by Frazer Chesterman

Tell me a bit about North American plastics and your role?

Tim: Thanks very much for the chance to chat, we are excited about being at the InPrint USA Show in Louisville, as we have a clear strategic view of the importance of Industrial Markets and we are at a crucial time in the development of our business, so this is very timely for us.

My role is within the sales and business development segments, and I continue to draw on several years’ experience within CPG, B2B and B2C markets which are reflected by diverse locations and brands within the North American plastics network and business structure.

We have a range of established and complex businesses who work with leading global brands; I aim to provide support to these products and leverage commercial opportunities as they arise through our regional or national distribution centers.

Tell me more about North American Plastics?

Tim: We have more than 90 locations across 13 unique brands (including Laird Plastics, Calsak Plastics, and Farco Plastics). So as a business we are both diverse and widespread.

North American Plastics is the industry's largest distributor of plastic sheet, rod, tube, and film. We are one of the biggest distributors to the industry of Rigid and Flexible material for Print and Industrial markets.

We offer a wide range of products from top-tier suppliers and substantial local inventories for prompt delivery with value-added services such as cut-to-size and fabrication.

One of our essential USPs is that we pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service and support. However, it’s not just exemplary service that matters, for us providing new materials that respond to our customer's needs and the changing business and retail environment is crucial. I am interested in chatting with customers at the show, as it always gives us valuable insight talking to both visitors and other exhibitors. Remember for us we like to collaborate with the print manufacturers and build strong relationships, often working in tandem with them.

There’s been some big news recently with your partnership with Veritiv – can you tell us more about this?

Tim: Well, you may already know that the Veritiv Corporation is headquartered in Atlanta and they are a Fortune 500® company, who is a leading North American business-to-business distributor of packaging, facility solutions, print, and publishing products and services; and also a provider of logistics and supply chain management solutions.
Like us, they serve customers in a wide range of industries, and it’s a big operation!

We have just announced that Veritiv will transfer all its non-paper based wide format products business to North American Plastics. Veritiv will continue to provide paper-based, grand and wide format products along with its core paper products for the commercial, digital, and graphic communications markets. Veritiv will no longer supply non-paper based wide format products.

This gives us a more extensive portfolio of products to offer our customers and prospective new customers. Its exciting news and well timed with the InPrint show around the corner, as it gives us, even more, to talk about.

I know you traditionally would attend the standard Print shows in the US. Why have you decided to attend the InPrint USA show?

Tim: I like the profile of the show, I like the fact it co-locates with the converting show, and I think we need to look outside the traditional print markets when we have such a broad range of products. We cut, convert and fabricate a fantastic array of substrates for lots of different applications. I know the Industrial Print show in Europe has opened up new industry potential. Also, I feel confident it will do the same in the US, and we will be there to benefit.

I also think that are some significant ‘trends’ that mean we need to offer innovative products and deliver them to market fast. Let be honest there are some big shifts in the way consumer’s purchase now, and this impacts on applications and materials in both packaging and industrial. We need to be continually evolving our product offering and getting into the market quickly.

Thanks, Tim – see you at InPrint USA in booth 443 – Louisville, Kentucky, 9-11 April 2019.
